What it does

A universal ir remote on your shelf runs the TV and air conditioner from the Smart Life app on your phone. It keeps you from walking back to a hot living room and wondering whether the AC is still running at home while you are at work. It costs less than branded remotes because it ships direct from China with no brand markup.

This universal ir remote replaces the pile of remotes on the coffee table with one small hub. It sends 38 kHz infrared commands to the TV and the air conditioner, and it works as a wifi universal remote, so you drive both from the Smart Life app on your phone instead of hunting for the right remote. You can also run the room while you are out: switch the AC off from work, or turn the TV on before you walk in.

Setting it up follows the three facts on the label. Power it from a USB port with DC 5V/1A, join it to your WiFi on the 2.4 GHz band, and control it in the Smart Life app. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant as well, so either assistant can handle the TV and the air conditioner by voice once it is in the app. The model is the S18 and it comes in black or white.

It suits a home with 2.4 GHz WiFi and a USB charger or USB outlet near the shelf where the hub will sit. It is not the right pick if your network runs on 5 GHz only, since this remote works on the 2.4 GHz band. It does not run on batteries.
