How to choose: Garden and watering
Fit. Tap timers screw onto an outdoor tap, so check the thread size on the product page. 3/4 inch is the usual garden hose thread in the US; in the UK and Europe taps are often 1/2 or 3/4 inch BSP and may need an adapter.
Wi-Fi or standalone. A Wi-Fi timer lets you change the schedule or water now from your phone, but it needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi that reaches the tap. A standalone timer is set on the device and keeps running without a signal.
Drip or sprinkler. Drip lines water pots and beds slowly at the roots and waste less water; sprinklers suit lawns. A two-zone timer runs each zone on its own schedule. In freezing weather, take the timer off the tap: water left inside can freeze and crack it.
