How to choose: Security
Indoor or outdoor. An outdoor camera needs a weatherproof rating (IP65 or higher) and either a power cable or a solar panel. An indoor camera can be smaller and plug into a USB adapter, and a pan-tilt model turns to cover a whole room from one spot.
Recording. Many Wi-Fi cameras record to a microSD card inside the camera, so footage stays at home and no cloud plan is needed. Check the specs on the product page for local storage and night vision.
Wi-Fi. Most smart cameras, locks and alarms connect over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, which reaches further through walls than 5 GHz. If your router uses one network name for both bands, the setup app may ask you to put your phone on 2.4 GHz while pairing.
Locks. Before ordering a smart lock, check the door thickness and the backup way in (a key or USB power) on the product page. The Works with filter shows which devices link to Alexa, Google Home or the Smart Life app.
