Automatic trash can, 15 L, IPX5 sensor lid

What it does

An automatic trash can opens the lid as your hand passes over it, so peelings and packaging go in and you get straight back to cooking. It ends the moment at a closed bin with both hands messy, trying to nudge the lid up with a wrist or an elbow. Bend a knee near the bin and the induction sensor in the flat lid reacts the same way. A small blue indicator light at the front edge shows the lid is powered and ready. The 15 L bin stands 30.5 cm tall, 26 cm wide and 18.5 cm deep, so it sits in a bathroom corner or at the end of a kitchen counter without taking the floor.

This automatic trash can is built for the rooms where trash piles up fastest: the bathroom, the end of the kitchen counter, the bedroom corner. The induction sensor in the flat lid reacts when a hand passes over it or a knee comes near, so the lid opens with no pedal, no handle and nothing to grip. A small blue indicator light at the front edge shows the lid is powered and ready.

Setting it up takes a minute. Stand the bin on the floor and fit batteries. There is no power cable to run along the wall and no app to install. You change the bag by hand: lift out the full one and fit a new one. The bin does not seal bags on its own.

It is a sensor trash can that opens a lid, and that is the whole job. It is not a connected device, so there is no phone app, no voice assistant and nothing that reports back to you while you are out of the house. It also does not mount on a wall or hang on a door. If you want a bin that opens itself when you come near and asks nothing else of you, this one fits that space. Keep the batteries out of reach of children.

• Wave a hand and the lid opensThe induction sensor sits in the flat lid. Pass a hand over it or bend a knee near the bin and the lid opens, so peelings and packaging go in without a pedal or a lid to lift. A blue indicator light at the front edge shows the lid is ready. A touchless trash can for the moments both hands are busy.
• Fits a narrow floor spaceThe bin is rectangular and stands 30.5 cm tall, 26 cm wide and 18.5 cm deep, holding 15 L. That footprint fits a bathroom corner, the end of a kitchen counter or the gap beside a toilet, where a round bin would not sit.
• No cord and no outlet to findIt runs on batteries and stands on the floor on its own. There is no power cable, hose or wall bracket to fit, so you can put it where the trash actually collects and move it to another room in one go.
• A lid rated IPX5The lid carries an IPX5 rating against water, which suits a bathroom where sinks splash and showers run. The plastic body wipes clean with a damp cloth, and the grey lid keeps its shape over daily use.
